Pioneer Projects

The following optional project has three parts to it. Some of the steps will need to be completed prior to trek and brought with you. At some point during our 3 day ‘Press Forward With a Steadfastness in Christ’ trek, each of us who complete this project will have an opportunity to share our findings.

During this pre-Trek assignment, each of us will come to better understand:

  1. What is a pioneer? (Particularly the handcart pioneers)
  2. Finding a pioneer in my own family.
  3. How I can be a modern day pioneer.

The following assignments can be applied to:

  • Personal Progress – Faith Value Project, Individual Worth #6, or Good Works Value project.
  • Duty to God – Family Activities #9

ASSIGNMENT #1 - WHAT IS A PIONEER?

Here are some ideas on places where you can find answers: Search online, in the your unit library, in your parents stash of books, on lds.org, from Church magazines.

Now that you have found some answers to the questions, write about who the Handcart Pioneers were...

ASSIGNMENT #2 - FINDING A PIONEER IN MY OWN FAMILY

You will begin to come to know your ancestors. Most of us don’t have ancestors who were handcarts pioneers, however, we have individuals in our family who were pioneers in the things they did and the choices they made that changed the future lives of their families. Your mission is to find that person, the following are some of the ways that you can find information on Your Pioneer Ancestor.

Once you have collected this information and you know which of your ancestors you have chosen to be your Pioneer, write their story. Include their name, dates, where they lived and everything you can tell about your ancestor and why you chose this person to be your Family Pioneer.

You will share this story during Trek, so bring it with you!

You may even want to take on the name of this ancestor during trek.

ASSIGNMENT #3 - HOW CAN I BE A MODERN-DAY PIONEER?

How can I be a Modern Day Pioneer?

During Trek, look for parallels between your own life and that of the pioneers. Take time to think and ponder while on Trek on how similar your life is to the trek made by the pioneers. Search for relevant scriptures.
